Is embalming required?

Usually not. No state requires routine embalming for every death. It is generally only needed if:

1. There will be a public viewing with an open casket (most funeral homes require it then), or
2. The body will be transported long distances or across some state lines, or
3. Burial or cremation is delayed beyond a certain number of days (varies by state).

Direct cremation and direct burial do not require embalming. Refrigeration is an accepted alternative in most states. Declining embalming typically saves $1,500 or more.
