What benefits do veterans get?

Read video transcript

Veterans with an honorable (or general) discharge may be entitled to meaningful burial benefits at no cost:

  1. A gravesite in a national cemetery, with opening/closing, a grave liner, and perpetual care — free
  2. A government headstone or marker, or a medallion for a private headstone — free
  3. A burial flag and, on request, military funeral honors (flag folding, Taps) — free
  4. A burial allowance toward costs in some cases (service-connected deaths pay more)
  5. Spouses and dependent children may also qualify for burial in a national cemetery

The key document is the DD-214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty).
