The most common ways:
- Payable-on-death (POD) bank account — money in your bank that a named person receives immediately at death. Simple, flexible, and you keep control.
- Life insurance — proceeds can be used to pay the funeral home directly (this usually requires an assignment form, which the funeral home can provide).
- Final expense insurance — a small life insurance policy meant for funeral costs.
- Savings — money set aside specifically for this purpose. Make sure someone can reach it quickly.
- The estate — the family pays from the person's remaining assets after death. Note that estate funds are generally subject to probate, which can delay access for weeks or months, while the funeral home expects payment much sooner.
- Pre-paid funeral plan — paying the funeral home ahead of time (read the contract carefully; ask what happens if you move or the business closes).
Many advisors favor the POD account or a simple savings fund: your money stays yours, earns interest, and works with any funeral home.
