Human composting — officially called natural organic reduction — is a newer option where the body is gently transformed into nutrient-rich soil over about 8–12 weeks, using wood chips, straw, and natural warmth. The family receives the soil, which can nourish a garden, trees, or a place in nature.
Things to know:
- It is currently legal in a growing list of states (Washington was first; several others have followed). If it is not offered in your state, some providers accept transport from out of state.
- Typical cost: $5,000 – $7,000, which usually includes the process and return of the soil.
- It is often chosen for environmental reasons — it uses far less energy than cremation and no embalming chemicals.
- A memorial service can still be held before or after, just like with cremation.
